This is an excellent opportunity for an intern to get hands-on experience in the administration and production of a touring festival in Los Angeles. From implementing a marketing plan, working with production and artistic staff, selling tickets and interacting with an audience and donors, this internship offers a behind the scenes entrée into producing theatre.
10 Week Project
The intern will work alongside Lisa Coffi, the Producing Artistic Director. Lisa Coffi will operate as the primary Mentor for the program.
The position will provide hands-on experience in producing theatre. The Intern will participate in the administration of two professional productions in Shakespeare by the Sea’s 2014 Admission Free touring Festival. The opportunity allows for exposure to theatre productions that tour to multiple open-air public venues reaching over 20,000 people.
The intern will participate in marketing, fundraising and general production activities for the festival.
Additional 10 week duties
The intern’s day to day schedule will vary based upon production needs, but will include mostly evening and weekend hours.
The intern will have the opportunity to participate in marketing efforts, promotion on social networking sites, on-site fundraising efforts, patron and donor correspondence, volunteer coordination, tour operations (technical and managerial), and general production.
SBTS pre-production activities (early June) include assisting with marketing and pre-production operations of the Shakespeare Festival. The intern will participate in viral promotion, the distribution of flyers and posters, attending rehearsals, assisting in press photos, preparing venue maps for actors & crew, attending volunteer meetings, inventorying of supplies, load-in of production equipment and fundraising merchandise at the Point Fermin Park Bandshell and will assist the producers with opening night festivities.
SBTS production and tour activities (June-Aug) will include: attending the productions in San Pedro and throughout LA and Orange counties; front of house activities; coordinating with nightly volunteers; flyer distribution; concession and merchandise booth set-up, operations and entering sales data into spreadsheets; raffle ticket sales; pre or post show on-stage announcements; interacting with the audience and sponsors; participating in surveys and evaluations (and tracking responses); interacting with cast, stage managers and a full production team.
Skills and requirements
Meticulous attention to detail, great attitude, enthusiasm for the arts, strong organizational and administrative skills, great phone etiquette, computer savvy, ability to work in high-pressure deadline driven situations, strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to work evenings as well as days, ability to lift 50 lbs, ability to follow-though, and a team player. Intern will need to provide their own car for transportation to and from the workspace and performance venues.
This is an excellent opportunity for an intern to get hands-on experience in the administration of producing shows for a touring festival. They will develop a deeper understanding of the administrative activities that support theatrical productions and the direct correlation of activities to results. They will be able to:
1) Assemble and collaborate with production and artistic staff
2) Coordinate and motivate volunteers
3) Interact with audience members and donors
4) Learn and execute some grass-roots marketing and fundraising activities
5) Get hands on experience of what it takes to produce a large admission free festival
